Classification of Teams The league forms teams which provide three distinct levels of play, following the guidelines of CYSA. These levels of play are competitive (Division 1 or 'A'), developmental (Division 3 or 'B'), and recreational (Division 4 or 'C'). The most competitive level teams are single age group teams (age pure) designated Division 1. Age groups from Under 9 through Under 16 form teams in March and April by league-wide tryouts. If enough players are interested, Under 17 to Under 19 teams are also formed, although this age group may play a Winter League season when there is no conflict with high school soccer. Division 1 teams are often called "A" teams. About 10% of SRYSL players are Division 1 teams. Division 2 teams are competitive teams which are not age pure. Division 2 teams are usually formed by leagues wanting to play competitive level soccer, but needing to combine age groups into two-year groupings to field a team. SRYSL does not form any Division 2 teams. Division 3 developmental teams are selected by most geographic clubs via tryouts in April and May. Teams are formed for two-year age groupings starting with Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 19. Division 3 teams are often called "B" teams. About 12% of SRYSL players participate in the Division 3 program. Recreational level teams are designated Division 4. These teams are two-year age groupings (Under 6 through Under 16) plus one three-year age group (Under 19). Formation procedures vary by club, but teams are formed with the intent of fielding equal strength teams. Separate boys and girls teams are formed in all age groups except possibly Under 19, where coed teams may be formed (some clubs also form Under 6 coed teams). Division 4 teams are often called "C" teams. More than 78% of SRYSL players are recreational.
